At Anna & Fabrizio’s wedding, I interpreted the official civil ceremony in addition to my duties as master of ceremonies.

Their big day was a Hungarian-Belgian-Italian tri-national wedding, as far as the newlyweds were concerned, as the guests came from all over the world. The yeses were said in the magnificent Cloisters of Vajdahunyad Castle.

Every wedding is special for me, I’m always a little bit nervous, always for a different reason. In their case, I was particularly excited to be faced with professional interpreters who were fluent in 4 languages. This has put me under particular pressure in terms of quality translation.

But there were also moments in the civil ceremony that perhaps I alone could see and understand.

The bride herself wrote some personal thoughts for the registrar’s toast, and she did not lie about her scientific, philosophical style, quoting great thinkers on marriage, and she shared with us not one smiling, but very serious thought through the registrar’s mouthpiece. The bridegroom had no idea of the content of the greeting text, only realising that his young wife had once again brought her own style when I began to translate the philosophical theses. I will never forget that expression, that wink, that loving recognition, full of pride in his bride’s education and distinction, yet unable to hide his stunned smile at the quotations so unusual at weddings.
